Deer Stalking Advice

Some deer stalking safety tips and advice on equipment

  • Never take a shot if there is any doubt about safety
  • Ensure that the line of fire has no obstacle in the way
  • Your gun should have the safety catch on after loading and it should not be released until just before the shot
  • Make certain that there is a solid unoccupied backdrop behind the deer and that your line of sight is uninterrupted
  • Make sure that your gun is unloaded when climbing in and out of high seats, crossing bridges and pathways, or entering buildings
  • Do not leave your gun unattended
    Do not discharge your gun unless you are sure that you are within an effective killing distance of the deer
  • Always check that there is no other deer or animal directly behind your prey
  • Never shoot a deer in the head but through the heart and lungs
  • Never shoot at a deer which is running

Deer Stalking Equipment

A deer stalker should carry the following items of equipment or equivalent

  • A pair of binoculars to correctly identify the prey. Telescopic sights should not be used for this purpose
  • A stick or bipod to aid the forward hand remain steady
  • A hunting knife or equivalent
  • A lamp or torch
  • Personal protective clothing
  • The gun must be calibrated and sights tested properly
  • Good hearing protection is recommended
  • High visibility vests are recommended
