Some deer stalking safety
tips and advice on equipment
- Never take a shot if there is any doubt about
safety
- Ensure that the line of fire has no obstacle in the
way
- Your gun should have the safety catch on after loading
and it should not be released until just before the
shot
- Make certain that there is a solid unoccupied backdrop
behind the deer and that your line of sight is
uninterrupted
- Make sure that your gun is unloaded when climbing in
and out of high seats, crossing bridges and pathways, or
entering buildings
- Do not leave your gun unattended
Do not discharge your gun unless you are sure that you are
within an effective killing distance of the deer
- Always check that there is no other deer or animal
directly behind your prey
- Never shoot a deer in the head but through the heart
and lungs
- Never shoot at a deer which is running
Deer Stalking
Equipment
A deer
stalker should carry the following items of equipment
or equivalent
- A pair of binoculars to correctly identify the prey.
Telescopic sights should not be used for this purpose
- A stick or bipod to aid the forward hand remain
steady
- A hunting knife or equivalent
- A lamp or torch
- Personal protective clothing
- The gun must be calibrated and sights tested
properly
- Good hearing protection is recommended
- High visibility vests are recommended
